đ Khutbah: Purify Your Soul, Save Your Life
Khutbah Part One
Alhamdulillah â all praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds, who created us with a purpose and sent down the guidance to live righteous and meaningful lives. We bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and we bear witness that Muhammad ï·ș is His final Messenger.
We begin with the words of Allah in Surah Ash-Shams:
âHe who purifies it will indeed be successful, and he who corrupts it is sure to fail.â
(Surah Ash-Shams, 91:9â10)
These verses speak to the central mission of every believer: the journey of the nafs (soul) â to cleanse it, discipline it, and save it from corruption.
1. The Trust Placed Inside You
Allah created the soul and gave it the ability to choose between good and evil:
âAnd inspired it [the soul] with its wickedness and its righteousness.â
(Surah Ash-Shams, 91:8)
This means every human being is equipped with both urges: the urge to sin and the urge to be righteous. But the path you walk depends on your choices.
The scholars of Islam say this ayah emphasizes the moral responsibility of the human being. You are not an animal driven by instinct. You are not a machine without a heart. You are a soul with a mission: to purify your heart and draw closer to your Lord.
2. What Does It Mean to âPurify the Soulâ?
To purify your soul is to cleanse it from all that distances it from Allah:
- Pride, which makes us think weâre better than others.
- Jealousy, which rots the heart and causes hatred.
- Greed, which makes us chase the dunya endlessly.
- Lust, which blinds our judgment and morality.
- Laziness, which keeps us away from worship.
- Anger, which turns us into oppressors.
All of these corrupt the soul.
On the other hand, to purify the soul means to:
- Develop sincerity in worship.
- Live with taqwa â God-consciousness.
- Forgive, give, and be humble.
- Submit your desires to Allahâs will.
- Fight your ego to please your Creator.
The Prophet ï·ș said:
âIn the body, there is a piece of flesh. If it is sound, the whole body is sound; and if it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt. Truly, it is the heart.â
(Bukhari & Muslim)
So your real task is not to fix the world outside youâyour job is to fix the world inside you.
3. Why Is It So Important?
Allah says clearly: âHe who purifies it will indeed be successful.â
The success mentioned here is not a job, money, or even health. The real success is:
- To meet Allah with a clean heart.
- To be saved from the Fire.
- To be admitted to Jannah.
âThe Day when neither wealth nor children will benefit anyoneâexcept he who comes to Allah with a sound heart.â
(Surah Ash-Shuâara, 26:88â89)
Every prayer, every Ramadan, every test in life is a tool to help you cleanse your heart.
4. The Tragedy of a Corrupted Soul
The second part of the verse is terrifying:
â…and he who corrupts it is sure to fail.â
When the soul is left unchecked, when sin is normalized, and when hearts grow hard, the result is khusran â total loss.
What kind of loss?
- You lose the peace of mind that comes with faith.
- You lose the ability to feel remorse or gratitude.
- You lose the closeness to Allah that brings light to the heart.
- You may even die while your soul is wrapped in sin.
May Allah protect us from a darkened heart.
I say these words of mine and ask Allah to forgive me and you. Seek His forgivenessâHe is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.
Khutbah Part Two
Alhamdulillah â all praise belongs to Allah who guides the hearts, forgives sins, and showers mercy upon His servants. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad ï·ș, who was the best example of a purified soul.
5. How Do We Purify Our Souls?
Letâs take some practical steps to purify our souls and be among the successful.
a) Sincere Tawbah (Repentance)
Nothing cleans the soul like sincere repentance. The Prophet ï·ș said:
âThe one who repents from sin is like one who never sinned.â
(Ibn Majah)
Return to Allah with regret. Cry to Him. Ask for forgivenessâeven if you sinned a thousand times.
b) Qurâan and Dhikr
The Qurâan is the light that heals your soul. Reading it daily, even a few verses, is like daily detox for your heart.
âIndeed, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.â
(Surah Ar-Raâd, 13:28)
c) Consistent Salah
Your salah is a spiritual washâfive times a day.
âIndeed, prayer prevents immorality and wrongdoing.â
(Surah Al-âAnkabut, 29:45)
Protect your prayers, and your prayers will protect you.
d) Good Company
Your friends affect your soul. Stay around those who remind you of Allah, not those who feed your desires.
âA man is on the religion of his close friend, so let one of you look at whom he befriends.â
(Tirmidhi)
e) Fighting the Nafs (Jihad al-Nafs)
When your nafs wants to speak badlyâstay silent.
When your nafs wants to sleep through Fajrâwake up.
This is real jihadâthe jihad against your lower self.
âThe greatest jihad is the jihad against your own self.â
(Bayhaqi)
6. Hope in Allah’s Mercy
Even if your soul is stained by sins, Allah can clean it completely. Never despair.
âSay: O My servants who have wronged themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins.â
(Surah Az-Zumar, 39:53)
You can start the purification todayâright nowâwith sincere intention.
7. The End Result: Success or Failure
Brothers and sisters, life is a journey from the womb to the graveâand beyond that, into eternity.
At the end of that journey, there are only two outcomes:
- Either your soul is clean, and you meet Allah with joy.
- Or your soul is dark, and you face the consequences of ignoring it.
Let us not be of those who neglected the soul while chasing the world.
âHe who purifies it will indeed be successful, and he who corrupts it is sure to fail.â
May we all be of the successful.
Duâa
O Allah, purify our hearts from hypocrisy, our deeds from showing off, our tongues from lies, and our eyes from betrayal. Make us from those who purified their souls and succeeded, and do not make us from those who corrupted their souls and failed.
Closing Reminder
âIndeed, Allah commands justice, excellence, and giving to relatives, and He forbids immorality, wrongdoing, and oppression. He warns you that you may remember.â
Aqim as-salah.
